The Woman in the Moon – Eternal Watcher of the Night Sky

I sat on the rocky shore by our empty house at the beach, the salty breeze teasing my hair as I gazed at the horizon. For years, I had waited for him there, my heart heavy with longing. “Will he ever come back?” I asked the moon, my only companion in the dark. “Do you think he remembers me?”
The moon had seen my struggle for years. She witnessed my sleepless nights; she stood by my side, listening to my questions that had no answers. She was there. Always. Understanding. For she, too, waits for her lover. She has, for eons.
One night, as she watched me search the horizon for the thousandth time, she lifted me up, higher and higher, to see the world from above, giving me the chance to look for him from the sky. I loved it there. I could see so far—vast oceans and distant shores—but he wasn’t there. Perhaps he had died… or was imprisoned somewhere… or… could he have forgotten me? No… that wasn’t possible. He had promised…
“Please,” I asked the moon, “can I stay up here, looking for him?” The moon pulsed warmly, wrapping me in her light. She united with me, and from that day on, I watched from the sky, forever searching for any sign of him. I became part of the moon, bathed in her glow, waiting for the day he would return to me.
Since then, I am known as the Man in the Moon. Well… I am not a man, but that’s what people call me. 🙂
